Collaboration and Networks

Over the years, as mandated by the University Senate, the Centre has developed, worked and maintained collaborations and networks to enable it achieve its Goal. The collaborations are arranged following the categories below:

  • Multi lateral and Bilateral International development agencies

    This has enabled the CHDC to continue enjoying its multi-disciplinary approach by working with its collaborators from various fields such as medicine, nutrition, economics, education, anthropology, demography, sociology, public health, computer science, bio-statistics etc.    Through collaborations, CHDC has taken on big projects both within and outside the country taking roles right from planning, implementation, monitoring and evaluation as well as training.   Below are some of the recent collaborations: 
  • The Children and Medicines Project (Child Med)

    This is a five year collaborative project (2010-2015) project under Child Health and Development Centre/Makerere University; Department of Anthropology, University of Copenhagen, Denmark.   Overall objective of the project is to improve the quality of medicine use and management for Children in Uganda through research and training.
  • HIV Counseling and Testing (HCT)

    This project is a collaboration of CHDC and Ministry of Health funded by the World Health Organization (WHO).  The project by building on background material on HCT policy and practice in Uganda, started in 2008 and is exploring experiences of people who have been tested for HIV in different settings, what it meant for them to go through this; the services they received and how those around them responded.   It is a multi-country study involving Malawi, Burkina Faso and Kenya.   • University of British Colombia

    The CHDC is collaborating with University of British Colombia to determine HIV related vulnerabilities among war-affected population in Gulu and Amuru Districts in Northern Uganda.  The collaboration is funded by the Canadian Institutes for Health Research (CIHR).   • TORCH (Tororo Community Health)

    The TORCH (Tororo Community Health) project was a 12-Year research and training collaborative project between Makerere University (through the CHDC-Tororo District), the University of Copenhagen (through the institute of Anthropology), and the University of Aarhus, Denmark (with the Department of Epidemiology and Social Medicine).  This project ended in 2007.  TORCH has given full support to 5 PhD students, 19 Masters Degree students and a number of academic/applied research related projects by Danish and Ugandan students.   • Combat Diseases of Poverty Consortium (CDPC)

    It is a consortium between Irish Aid and Higher Education and Research Institute (HEA). The CHDC together with other academic, NGO, and expertise to build educational and research capacities for combating diseases and poverty.  [+] about Combat Diseases of Poverty Consortium (CDPC)

  • The districts and Communities the Center has worked with in the past

    • Greater Tororo including Butaleja, Busia and Nakapiripirit Districts through TORCH (Tororo Community Health project).
    • Southwestern districts monitored by the Nutrition and Early Childhood Project (NECDP) - Mbaraara, Ntungamo, Bushenyi, Rukungiri, Kanungu, and Bundibugyo).
    • Kapuwai, Pallisa District through PACODET (Pallisa Community Development Trust)
    • Kiyeyi through the Kiyeyi Health Centre.  
    • Zirobwe in Luwero District, Kisiizi and Nyakibale communities in Rukungiri district through piloting of community health financing and insurance scheme.
