Transfusion Camp is an education program designed to strengthen transfusion knowledge and promote best practices by delivering high-quality, relevant training in transfusion medicine (TM). The program targets postgraduate medical residents and their faculty across clinical specialties involved in blood transfusion. It has been recognized as a novel and scalable model for effective TM education (Lin et al., Transfusion, 2019).
First established in 2012 at the University of Toronto, Canada, Transfusion Camp began as a training initiative for postgraduate medical trainees and has since evolved into a national program led by University of Toronto faculty. The program is centrally managed by Canadian Blood Services and delivered nationwide through strong collaboration among transfusion medicine experts, residency training program administrators, and regional partner organizations.
Beyond Canada, Transfusion Camp has expanded internationally to the United Kingdom (across three medical schools) and, more recently, in 2022, to Rwanda at the University of Rwanda in Kigali. It is now being introduced in Uganda. Since its inception, the program has trained over 3,000 postgraduate trainees, contributing significantly to improved transfusion education and practice globally.
The upcoming Transfusion Camp scheduled for September 2025 in Uganda will initially target postgraduate medical students (Senior House Officers) at Makerere University College of Health Sciences and Mbarara University of Science and Technology. The camp will be delivered through a combination of didactic lectures and problem-based learning seminars, emphasizing practical, evidence-based approaches.
By adapting internationally recognized transfusion guidelines to the local context, the program aims to enhance transfusion medicine knowledge, improve clinical practice, and ultimately contribute to a safer hospital environment and better patient outcomes.
