The World Health Organization’s report on Persons With Disabilities (PWDs) estimates that more than 1 billion people live with disability today and expects an increase because of an aging population, effects of climate change, international armed and civil conflicts, and disease..
This study set out to examine how technological innovations (re)shape the competences and skills of people with disabilities. Funded by the National Swiss Foundation (SNF) between 2015– 2018, this study also sought to understand the interface between social interaction/ social networks and the appropriation and use of tech¬nologies by people with disabilities. It also analyzed how the global and local institutional policy frameworks on technology are linked to/ influence the skills and competences of people with disabilities. The study also aimed at producing genuine knowledge about the actual needs of people with disabilities regarding technology in Uganda.
As a result of this study, 4 PhDs were pursued (2 Ugandan, 2 Swiss), and 1 Post-Doctoral Degree. Secondly, the project came up with processes of technological translation to determine the production, access, and use of technologies by the persons with disabilities.
