Ms. Mukama Proscovia

Mukama Proscovia is a Librarian by profession at the rank/position of Librarian in Makerere University in the Makerere University Library services.  I am currently working in the Library of Child Health and  Development Centre (CHDC), Makerere University, as a Librarian.

Academic Qualifications:  I hold a Master’s  Degree in Library and Information Science (MSc in Inf. Scie) of Makerere University obtained in 2013,  a Bachelor’s Degree in Library and  Information Science (BLIS) of Makerere University obtained in 2004, a Diploma in Library and Information Science (DLIS) of Makerere University obtained in 2000 and a Certificate in Library and Information Science of Makerere University obtained 1991.

Work Experience: I have worked for Makerere University under the University library services for 35 years. I was first appointed in Makerere University in 1991 as a Library Assistant working at the level of a support staff. In 2006 I was appointed to a position of Librarian II under the Makerere University Library Services, a senior-level position.  In 2017 I was promoted to the rank of Librarian I under the Makerere University Library Services.  When harmonization of positions in Makerere University under the Public Services Act was carried out, I was designated a Librarian.

I have worked in different places (libraries) and positions in the Makerere University Library services. I worked in the    Women and Gender Studies Library by then in the Faculty of Social Sciences from 1991 to 2006 (15 years). I was working as a support staff then.  I worked in Makerere University Library from 2006-2014 (8 years) as a Senior staff, College of Engineering, Art and Design (CEDAT) Library from 2014-2022 (8 years) as the College Librarian.  Currently I am working in CHDC library located in CHDC in the School of Medicine in the College of Health Sciences from 2022-Todate (4 years) as a Senior staff at the rank of Librarian.

Nature of the work done: The main work I do in the library is to acquire information materials, process it, digitize and disseminate information to the library users, making it easier for staff/students to retrieve the necessary information in the quickest time possible.   I also link the units/departments in those libraries I serve with the website of Makerere University Library and other library websites in Makerere University so that staff and students access online information on these websites. Other activities include binding and repair of worn-out library materials and weeding (removal of outdated books) from the library collection.

Research Experience: I carried out research at the different levels of education I attained:  at the Certificate, Diploma, Degree, and Master’s levels.  The research topics are listed below:

Mukama Proscovia (2013) “Internet use among the University female students: a case study of Kyambogo University.  A dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the Master’s Degree in Library and Information Science of Makerere University.

Mukama Proscovia (2004) “A study of the Impact of the Internet on Women's Emancipation in Uganda:  a case study of the female academic staff at Makerere University”. A  dissertation submitted in partial fulfilment of the requirements for the award of the Degree of Bachelor of Library and Information Science of Makerere University.

Mukama Proscovia (2000) “Information accessibility and utilization in the Women and Gender Studies Departmental Library, Makerere University: towards the automation of the library”. A research report submitted to EASLIS as a requirement for the award of a Diploma in Library and Information Science of Makerere University.

Mukama Proscovia (1991) “An Annotated Bibliography of books on language in the Faculty of Arts book bank”. A research report presented for the award of a Certificate in Librarianship of Makerere University.
